I noticed that there was an ad on my facebook page to make an avatar. It seems like by using a picture of Angelina Joli juxtaposed to an avatar,
Zwinky is trying to send the message "look like whoever you want" while simultaneously implying "be whoever you want."

hmm..it seems like zwinky is trying to create fictional realities too =)
Boy, talk about hiding your true identity...but then again..I dont understand why you need an "avatar" when you have a picture on facebook of yourself, right?
Maybe people are identifying online more with their online identity, even in social networks where supposedly they've met people in person.
I just created a facebook account (someone else invited me...so I broke down and did it). I haven't had too much time to explore but it does appear that a lot of people don't put their own picture on their profile. I've seen drawings, avatars, pictures of children, sometime pictures of the person but with other people. I would suppose you could get into a whole realm of research just about how people decide what to put to represent themselves in terms of a still picture...let alone virtual worlds where you can add text, gestures, actions, and emotes.
